In Session With…Chelsey Bennett

What Is Your Style?
Style. Some music has a certain style…like in this conversation with Chelsey Bennett we talk about Nina Simone whose music clearly had a distinct style. And the music Chelsey leans into a bit of jazz, some soul, that unmistakable R&B those are all genres with style…with hallmark sounds and striking characters.

The music makers stand out as much as the music…to go back to Nina Simone for example. As a music maker Chelsey comes in with style, she dresses with vision. It’s great and I dig it but it does make me unsuccessfully smooth down the wrinkles in my t-shirt.

I wonder what she said about process…about writing and recording and release her No End EP she said it took “forever.” Is style the same way?

Can you just naturally have style the way some people come out Day 1 Funny or is style a process? A process is fits and starts, the grinding of gears until you get the hang of it and can drive forward with confidence and direction. None of this is resolved; understandably so but at least some of the parameters of the conversation are established.

Speaking of established style if you ever have a chance go to the Poetry Jazz Cafe. Crazy cool place where you can see cool cats like Chelsey Bennett play. But do remember to smooth out the wrinkles in your t-shirt before you go…that place is classy.
