There’s never one reason why people form a band…the journey to assemble a band; to bring 4 or 5 distinct individuals and have each person submit their identity for the collective differs. Every band has a different story; it’s one of the fundamental elements we tend to overlook because we’re focused on the music or other key aspects.
Jen Schaffer and the Shiners is a prime example. You got Simon Law who is in Soul II Soul and a record producer. Jen Schaffer who is a mediator…I mean as I say in the interview most people who are in a band work at Starbucks. These individuals have established careers; they’re older than say a band forming at the end of high school.
Being older and in legitimate professions gives them that simmering rage…that anger all is not right in this world. It comes through their music check out Blood Of The Lamb. It’s a pushback folk music…in the ethical tradition of Bob Dylan.
Folk is about traditions; I hope Jen Schaffer and the Shiners continue a tradition of putting out excellent music.
